Characteristics of sludge and sludge treatment methods

Stellar Tech – Sludge generated from industrial wastewater treatment can contain high levels of heavy metals such as: copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd ) and other heavy metals. These heavy metals can be harmful to the environment and human health if not handled properly.

To learn more about the properties and effective sludge treatment methods . Let’s take a look at the article below with Stellar Tech!

A. CHARACTERISTICS OF SLUDGE
1. Organic content:

Sludge contains many organic substances of biological or chemical origin.

Sludge can contain many organic substances and nutrients, making it a valuable resource for organic fertilizer production. However, sludge also has disadvantages and challenges in using as fertilizer, as follows:

– Bad smell

– Sludge often has a foul odor due to organic decomposition and the presence of gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide.

– Bad odors not only cause discomfort but also pollute the surrounding air environment.

– Bacterial infections and diseases:

+ Sludge contains bacteria and other microorganisms, some of which can cause disease and environmental pollution.

+ Bacteria in sludge can be dangerous to human and animal health if not handled properly.

– High humidity and difficult to transport:

+ Sludge has a lot of water, so it has high humidity and the ability to flow freely, making transportation difficult.

+ High humidity also increases volume and reduces efficiency during sludge treatment and use.

– Fresh sludge, immediately after collection and untreated, is not recommended for use directly as fertilizer.

2. Sludge generated from industrial wastewater treatment:

May contain high levels of heavy metals such as: copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd) and other heavy metals. These heavy metals can be harmful to the environment and human health if not handled properly.

B. METHOD OF TREATMENT OF SLUDGE
Sludge treatment method using sludge compression tank

Sludge compression tanks operate on the same principle as circular sedimentation tanks. Accordingly, the solution containing sludge will enter the tube area in the center of the tank. Thanks to the influence of gravity in a static environment, sludge in the water will settle to the bottom. The clean water above will go out through the trough around the tank and continue to be treated.

Some high-capacity systems also have a residue scraper at the bottom of the center. When the sludge settles, the sludge wiper will push it to the bottom of the tank faster. From this area, sludge will be pumped into the press.

Additionally, to allow the water to have clearances and upward movement on the face, the lever area of the wiper is mounted from wooden or steel bars. When the machine moves around the axis, these vertical bars will stir the sludge mass so that water will rise up, making the sludge thicker.

Method of treating sludge with sludge drying yard:

The mud drying yard is considered a step to dry the mud, reducing the moisture content of the mud to about 70 – 80%, meaning the dry matter content in the mud increases to 20 – 30%.

The mud drying yard is an area covered with waterproof material or reinforced concrete. The bottom is lined with stones of different sizes to aid drainage. Above the stone layers is a layer of sand, the open part above is used to contain the amount of mud that needs to be dried.

However, the mud drying yard takes up quite a large area, so this step is only suitable for places with a large area. Water leaking from mud can contaminate groundwater, so mud drying yards should be built in places where the groundwater level is about 1 meter or more below the ground.

Sludge stabilization by anaerobic digestion:

This is a method of stabilizing sludge and can reduce volume and stabilize sludge properties. This method also has the potential to reduce the amount of pathogenic organisms in wastewater sludge.

The process of decomposing substances in an anaerobic digestion system can be divided into several steps. The process of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge takes place over a long period of time and the total temperature is relatively stable, usually at 35°C for 20 days to achieve optimal disinfection and methane production results. Anaerobic digestion technology can recover large amounts of methane gas, however, it takes a long time to install and build a large treatment tank system, and the waste from this system still requires the installation and construction of a large treatment tank system. Large treatment tank system, waste from this system still requires appropriate treatment technology such as landfill or reuse as fertilizer.

Aerobic decomposition:

The decomposition process takes place thanks to aerobic microorganisms participating in decomposing organic matter and generating heat. Decomposition temperature can be up to 70°C. Normally, for aerobic treatment, the sludge temperature can reach 50-65°C after 5-6 days, so disease-causing bacteria will be destroyed. Operating costs for aerobic treatment are high compared to anaerobic digestion systems but the time is shorter. Similar to anaerobic digestion technology, waste after aerobic digestion still requires appropriate technology such as burial or reuse as fertilizer.

Method of treating wastewater sludge with a sludge dewatering machine:

Sludge dewatering machines are used in the final stage of the wastewater treatment process, playing a role in condensing liquid sludge into sludge cake with a certain dryness, helping to minimize the pollution concentration of filtered water in the wastewater treatment process. sludge pressing process.

However, currently on the market the price of sludge dewatering machines is quite high. Besides, during the operation of the sludge dewatering machine, there are also cases of problems that take a long time to repair and maintain, causing difficulties in the waste treatment process. Therefore, sludge dewatering rental service has become a useful solution for businesses in waste treatment. Not only does it solve the problem of machinery and time, our sludge dewatering rental service also saves costs for investors.
